Leading Paper Mill NTPM Goes Green As Solarvest Delivers 8.9 MWp Solar Project

Malaysia, 25 April 2024 – Leading Malaysian paper mill Nibong Tebal Paper Mill Sdn Bhd (“NTPM”) is taking steps to go green as the manufacturer took delivery of an additional 8.9MWp solar project from Solarvest Holdings Bhd (“Solarvest”).

The accumulative RM27 million solar project which commenced operations on 31 December 2023, will power NTPM’s facilities across Nibong Tebal, Penang, and Parit Buntar, Perak, respectively. With the fully energized project, NTPM would be able to effectively monitor and reduce their carbon emissions, a move that will help the company comply with Bursa Malaysia requirements for listed companies to report on their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The solar project marks NTPM’s latest and most comprehensive effort to build sustainability into their operations. As the manufacturer of national famous household products brand such as PREMIER tissue, CUTIE COMPACT eco-friendly tissue, DIAPEX diapers, and a host of other paper products, NTPM has also conducted many awareness campaigns to highlight the importance of using Eco-Friendly Tissue Paper (recycled paper). In the process of making their Eco-Friendly Tissue Paper, they ensure that it is at least 50% post-consumer waste-recovered fibre, with the rest being fibre material that was 100% derived from recycled sources.

Chief Operating Officer of Project Development and Engineering at Nibong Tebal Paper Mill Sdn Bhd, Chong Chat (Frankie) Lee shared, “Adopting clean energy solutions is a critical move in ensuring we play our part in pushing forward the nation’s plans towards energy transition. In FY2023, emissions were an average of 887 kg of CO2e per ton of paper. By adopting solar, NTPM is able to realise its carbon emissions to be reduced by approximately 7,365 tons annually. This is in line with NTPM’s five-year target of not exceeding 1000 kg of CO2e per ton of paper.”

Executive Director and Group Chief Executive Officer of Solarvest, Mr. Davis Chong Chun Shiong (张俊雄) added, “Producing paper and packaging is an intensive process with significant energy demands. Solarvest is proud to support NTPM in their sustainability journey and looks forward to further collaborations in driving environmental stewardship. Energy production accounts for over 70% of GHG emissions, making it crucial to explore green options to reach Malaysia’s carbon neutrality goal by 2050. Whereby, installing solar panels and implementing carbon accounting measures is currently the most feasible and effective way to decarbonize and evaluate our actions.”

Solarvest has been NTPM’s long-term green energy partner with on-going collaboration and upcoming projects opportunities in the pipeline.
